Steam like a pro
Steaming milk for coffee doesn't have to be complicated, but it is worth putting in a little effort. Here are our simple tips for achieving perfectly steamed milk with a beautiful foam.
How to steam milk
- Position the steam wand correctly at the surface of the milk. Find a fixed point and avoid moving the jug back and forth.
- Milk with a lower fat content requires less steaming. You may want to lower the steam wand just beneath the surface.
- Angle the steam wand about 30 degrees towards the centre, allowing the milk to circulate in the jug.
Pro tips
- When pouring your pattern, start slow and steady. Hold the jug slightly higher at first to keep the stream thin and controlled – this helps the milk mix smoothly with the coffee.
- Begin pouring from the centre of the cup, so the pattern can rise and move naturally towards the top.
- If your finishing line ends up too long, try lifting the jug a bit more at the end of the pour.
